I started pursuing wealth management as a career when I chose finance as my major at Minnesota State University in 1999. During my time at MNSU, I was vice president of the finance club and served as a captain on the baseball team. Since 2004, I’ve worked under the umbrella of North Star Resource Group. Along the way, I’ve gained expertise in variety of financial areas. I earned the highly-regarded CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™
, or CFP®
designation in 2010 and remain committed to a broad understanding of personal finance. I live in Southwest Minneapolis with my wife, Maggie, and two children, Kaitlyn & Ben. Outside the office, I’m a devoted squash player, a racket sport I started playing in 2008. I love spending time outside and appreciate everything Minneapolis and greater Minnesota has to offer. I’m grateful to live in such a great state.
I help people invest their money and make sound financial decisions using an evidence-based, data-driven approach. I’m a curious person with a thirst for industry knowledge. I help clients deploy practical solutions and strategies void of gimmicks. I embrace simplicity and efficiency.
My happiest clients understand that good financial advisors help their clients avoid bad choices. Rational, intelligent people often act irrationally when confronted with important financial decisions. There is strong evidence that shows investors’ realized returns are lower than their actual investment returns due to behavioral mistakes. I do my best to close this gap.
It’s common for clients to overestimate the ability of their advisors to predict market movements and make timely transactions based on those predictions. This is not reality. Instead, I place emphasis on the things I can control – diversifying a portfolio, keeping costs low, minimizing taxes, and managing client behavior. No one can predict the future, but I stand by the belief that a lot can be learned by understanding the past.
In addition to helping clients manage their investments, I help them be efficient with their money. I have a well-rounded understanding of many aspects of personal finance. In a typical client relationship, I help clients with the following:
· Optimizing usage of available tax-saving strategies*
· Risk management and insurance planning
· Financial planning and analysis
· Debt management and debt optimization
· Small business planning
Most of my clients compensate me through an investment advisory fee that is tied to the investments I help them manage. Other compensation arrangements exist where I earn a commission or charge a flat fee for service. I’m thoughtful in how I charge fees and want to provide a great value for the work I do.
